Small Animal Acupuncture, Food Therapy / Herbs and Tui-Na Massage

María Isabel (Bel) Fuentes Benéytez, DVM, MRCVS, TCVM MSC

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM)

There are many disciplines within TCVM, Acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy and massage are the main four I use often in combination.

Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments, used successfully for over 2000 years.

Nowadays using hair-thin, single-use needles placed in specific points to stimulate biochemical pathways helping the body release beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters.

Acupuncture is effective in chronic pain management of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. It can produce excellent results, reducing the need for medication.

Conditions treated such as Arthritis in front and hind legs and Hip Dysplasia as well as Epilepsy. Gastro-Intestinal disease also benefits from acupuncture and food therapy. Skin diseases normally require a change in diet and a course of herbal supplements.

Animals tolerate well the use of acupuncture and can often be seen relaxed even sleeping.

The treatment

Each session lasts around 40 minutes depending on the patient’s condition. The initial session will be longer, then of 4-6 sessions close together,  preferably once a week, the frequency is then reduced but can be ongoing once every few months in chronic conditions, however, every case is individual and some young aminal only have one or two sessions.
